August 2023 Call for Artists (updated 8/16/23)

The weather isn’t the only thing that is hot! We have 34 opportunities for sculptors in this block of call for artists. But wait, there’s more!
On August 16 we have added 2 more calls and one call’s deadline has been extended. Adding these to the July 27 updates, August now has 46 Calls for Artists, many with more than one “winner”! There are projects from coast to coast with numerous chances to get your work seen, plus many commission opportunities for sculptors. Budget ranges up to over $300,000 so there is surely something here for every 3 dimensional artist.

2024 Napa Lighted Art Festival
Napa, California
Summary: Both artists and artist collaborative groups are encouraged to apply to have an installation featured at the Napa Lighted Art Festival. For 2024, approximately 15 installations are being sought. The festival supports the innovative techniques using light and light technologies as a growing art medium. Light itself in any form should be the actual artwork and we require that the role of light be essential to your concept. We are not looking for artworks where light is used only to illuminate it. We also strongly encourage new technologies and innovative use of light.
Budget: stipends range between $2,000-$10,000

Hispanic History and Heritage Project
Thornton, Colorado
Summary: This project will commission 3-D, interactive, site-specific work that will celebrate the history and cultural contributions of the Hispanic community in Thornton. The work will be challenged to move away from a monolithic approach and explore multilingual, multicultural, and multiethnic themes to bring light to the nationalities, generations, gender identities, and weave the story of the Hispanic Diaspora.
Budget: $87,000

Special Notes: Artists are strongly encouraged to explore contemporary materials, themes, and utilize interdisciplinary practices to meet the scope of the project in addition to unique and exciting use of technology. This project asks artists to go beyond the use of static imagery/statuary to engage visitors and activate the park with a contemporary, innovative, and permanent public art piece.

46th ANNUAL BETTY BOWEN AWARD
Seattle, Washington
Summary: Since 1977, the Seattle Art Museum has hosted the yearly open call process by which the Betty Bowen Committee chooses one visual artist working in the Northwest to receive the unrestricted cash award.
Budget: $15,000 and a selection of works by the winner will be exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum.

“Small Works” at Strata Gallery

Summary: Small Works is a juried exhibition that will run from September 26 – October 13, 2023.

Old Town Two-Year Coppell Public Art Exhibit
Coppell, Texas
Summary: CAC will award a stipend to up to 10 professional sculptures that are appropriate for public viewing and supports the family / community- oriented values of Coppell. Sculptures are owned by the artist and are loaned to the exhibit for a two-year period. All sculptures musts be safe for a public setting and made of materials that can withstand the harsh Texas weather and not require any maintenance.
Due to the scale and openness of the area large, monumental sculptures are encouraged.
Budget: The honorarium is $1,800 dollars with an additional $500 awarded to the People’s Choice. CAC does conduct fundraising to purchase a sculpture and gift to the town.

Hope – 2023 (Exhibition and Publication)

Summary: We believe that through your artistic expression, we can collectively illuminate the world with hope. At its core, the theme of hope is boundless and open to countless artistic interpretations. It encompasses a wide array of subjects. All interpretations in any 2D and 3D art medium, abstract or representational are welcomed.

Summary: This call for artists will reach out for four different project opportunities on the project site.
The aim for all four artwork opportunities is to create world-class public artwork in a diverse range of mediums that are designed to engage the community, and showcase the cultural diversity of the city and enhance the various civic and public spaces.
This program is searching for innovative Artists and Artist Teams with an ability to creatively approach engaging and active public art, and a deep understanding of how public art complements and challenges our community and civic environment.
Budget: $1,000,000 total. There is a wide range of projects and budgets to suit both emerging and established artists.

Art on the Corner 2023 Temporary Outdoor Exhibit
Grand Junction, Colorado
Summary: The 2023 AOTC Exhibit will be curated by Brian Harrison & Troy Reynolds. Both of these curators have an extensive history with Art on the Corner. Each one brings a different experience to the program.
Budget: All artists who are accepted will receive a $1,000 honorarium after installation. Two nights of lodging will also be provided for accepted artists for Friday, October 6th and Saturday, October 7th, 2023.

Summary: The Municipality of Anchorage is inviting qualified artists to create public artwork proposals for the Anchorage Police Department’s newly renovated Elmore facility, located in Anchorage, Alaska.

Summary: The City of Kokomo invites you to participate in our 2023-2025 juried, on-loan, outdoor sculpture exhibit in downtown Kokomo, Indiana. Rendered Fusion: Clay, Connection, Attention – NCECA 2024 Annual

Summary: The NCECA Annual blends impactful attributes of invitational and open juried models of exhibition development. Exhibition co-curators Elizabeth Schlatter and Lauranett Lee’s organizing concept is brought to life through the work of five invited artists. The co-curators will select additional works and artists for the exhibition through an open call for submissions.

Summary: The Bicentennial Park group of the Bicentennial Macon 200 seeks artists to submit qualifications for public artwork(s) in the Bicentennial Park. Summary: The DiMattio Gallery at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ is currently accepting proposals for the 2024 academic year. Proposed Exhibition Date: January 16 – March 8, 2024. Marlow Heights Community Center-Public Art Opportunity
Marlow Heights, Maryland
Summary: The Project includes two separate components. Artists may submit qualifications for either or both projects. However, artist candidates will be potentially selected as a finalist to execute only one of the projects. The selected artist candidates will be invited to develop and present their proposal to the Marlow Heights Design/Construction Team and community stakeholders.
1) A free-standing sculptural element on the plaza which must fit within a 10’x10’ area and not to exceed 18’ in height. The selected artist for the sculptural element will design, fabricate and install the art feature, which may be glass, metal, stone, concrete, wood, mixed media or lighting suitable for a low-maintenance exterior application. Budget: $150,000
2) A functional bench enhanced by mosaic elements. Individual artists or artist teams will be selected to develop a proposal for the mosaic application to the bench. The foundation for the bench will be fabricated and installed by the project’s construction contractors and thus require close coordination with the Design/Construction Team members. Budget: $80,000

SUNY Oneonta School of Liberal Arts & Business (SLAB) – Artist-in-Residence Program

Summary: SUNY Oneonta invites proposal submissions for eight-week residencies from visual artists and designers working in any medium. Preference, however, will be given to artists working in mediums that further enhance our present curriculum, such as printmaking, bookmaking, drawing, fiber, VR, AR, AI, and complementary or multi-media formats. Residents will exhibit, publish, or present work completed during the residency by the end of the Spring 2024 semester. Residents have the option to work with the Gallery Director to present an exhibition at the conclusion of their residency period.

ArtsThrive – 33rd Annual Art Exhibition and Benefit
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Summary: The primary goal for the ArtsThrive Art Exhibition and Benefit is to raise funds for the Albuquerque Museum. The Foundation supports the Museum’s permanent and traveling exhibits, acquisitions of artwork and historic objects for their collection.
3-D/CASE-DISPLAYED ART: 3-D artwork that is displayed in a case are limited to two (2) works. Each piece cannot exceed 20 inches in any one dimension (height, width or length). Jewelry artists may submit a jewelry set of three (3) total pieces to be displayed, as a set, in a jewelry display case. This will only be applicable for SETS OF JEWELRY (i.e. one (1) necklace, one (1) bracelet, and one (1) pair of earrings), otherwise, the 3-D case art rules will apply.
Exhibition Dates: March 16, 2024 through April 14, 2024
Budget: All artwork is for sale to the public during the 4-week exhibition from March 16 – April 14, 2024. The sale price is set by the Artist. The Albuquerque Museum Foundation will retain 40% of the Artist’s price on all artworks sold. The remaining 60% will be paid to the Artist.

Call to Sculpture Artists – Sun Valley Rd

Summary: The City of Ketchum, Idaho invites experienced artists to apply for Ketchum’s sculpture first exhibition on a brand new plinth. Original three-dimensional artwork selected by a blind jury will be displayed either at Sun Valley Rd/Spruce Ave from September 2023 through April 2024.

Summary: The City of Denver’s Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create original public artwork(s) for the Behavioral Health Solutions Center. Artwork should invite reflections of tranquility, peace, joy and comfort. Artists are encouraged to consider biophilic and trauma-informed design strategies that support mental health through color, pattern and subject matter. Biophilic design is the practice of connecting people and nature within our built environments and communities. Bayview Sculpture Project

Summary: Bayview Foundation and the Bayview Public Art Selection Committee invite artists and artist teams to submit public art qualifications for the design and installation of a sculpture near the entrance to Bayview Community Center. The intention for this piece is to be a beacon that marks Bayview’s entryway and creates a welcoming bridge to all residents and visitors. Bayview welcomes the possibility for the sculpture to have functional attributes that foster people coming together and interacting. In addition, the artist or team will be charged with developing a sculpture that acknowledges the history of the land on which it stands; honors the social cohesion of the neighborhood; and evokes a future of belonging.

Special Notes: The selection committee anticipates the sculpture will be of significant scale and visible from a distance of two city blocks, as well as holding a presence within a 900 square foot hardscaped area, and the adjacent two-story community center.

2023 – Art on the Rim
El Paso, Texas
Summary: This public art exhibit showcases sculptures along Rim Road in El Paso, Texas. Rim Road is adjacent to Scenic Drive. A historic road that runs along the Franklin Mountains and overlooks the city of El Paso. Works may be functional or non-functional. Existing sculptures as well as proposals for work to be created are accepted. Proposals can be submitted as a sketch/illustration along with examples of other work that demonstrates artistry, proficiency, and finish quality.
The works selected for this public art exhibition will be on loan for a period of 32 days and will be available for sale during that time (if the artist chooses to).
Event Dates: 9/30/23 – 10/31/23
Budget: Each selected artist will receive a $500 stipend per piece. There will also be a $500 “Best of Show” award.

Summary: The VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program, showcases the work of visual artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, who reside in the United States. Summary: Frankfort Sculpture Trail is a curated exhibition of outdoor sculpture displayed throughout the heart of downtown Frankfort. Frankfort is the capital of KY, a small town with a population of 50,000. Frankfort is conveniently located within 80 miles of Lexington, Louisville, and Cincinnati, OH and draws 400,000+ visitors each year. The Sculpture Trail is a collaboration between FrankArts, Josephine Sculpture Park, the City of Frankfort, and Frankfort Tourism Commission. Over the next 2 years, the Trail will highlight over 25 sculptures, including pieces from private and permanent collections. Up to 15 of the sculptures will be on loan from selected artists and on display for 2 years. This is an opportunity for artists to showcase and sell their creations, while enhancing the cultural environment of Frankfort.

Summary: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced that the City of Wichita has been approved for a $75,000 ‘Our Town’ award in support of “A City Where I Belong: A Toolkit for Artists.” These placemaking grants support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into local efforts to strengthen and authentically engage communities in order to advance local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes in communities.

Summary: The City of Tempe is seeking an experienced visual artist or artist collective to create an eye-catching participatory art piece that is site specific to six Arts in the Parks events held over three weekends from Jan 20th to Feb 4th, 2024, from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM.
This visual or multi-modal artwork should be vibrant, dynamic, and engaging to encourage community exploration and creative collaboration. Summary: The committee is seeking ceiling mounted work in the commons area of the building. The ceiling area is approximately 30’ long by 18’ wide. The art installation will be suspended from a metal deck with concrete above that is supported by steel bar-joist. The committee would like to see work that is more geometric or stylized and less narrative or figurative, and work that isn’t too literal. Work in the materials or methods being taught in the building are encouraged, such as steel or metal, using laser or water cutting. Additional materials could include: carbon fiber, alloys, engineered wood products, dimensional lumber, timbers, plastics, or acrylics. The committee would like to see work that is colorful and that makes the building appear more inviting for students and visitors.

For these reasons and more, under the aegis of the Hektoen Institute of Medicine, we launch the COVID-19 Monument of Honor, Remembrance, & Resilience. Summary: The Art in Public Places Program enriches New Mexico’s public spaces through an innovative and diverse public art collection. Since its inception in 1986, the program has placed more than 2,500 works of art in all of New Mexico’s 33 counties. Our goal is to reflect the diversity of the arts in New Mexico, the Southwest, and nation while building a dynamic public art collection for the State of New Mexico.
