Call for Artists March Out

March is heading out like a lion in terms of opportunities for sculptors! Today we are proud to announce 21 call for artists with deadlines March 20-31, 2021. This post has sculpture opportunities of all sizes, with numerous 6 figure public art commissions.


Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Public Monument

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Summary: The City of Fort Wayne, Indiana is seeking one or more professional public artist(s) for
the design, fabrication, and installation of a public monument to commemorate Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Fort Wayne visit and subsequent speech on June 5, 1963. The
selected artist(s) for the commission will conceptualize and develop appropriate
designs for the proposed monument. The target date of completion is the 60th
anniversary of Dr. King’s visit to Fort Wayne.

Budget: $250,000

Sun Valley Neighborhood Public Art Project

Denver, Colorado

Summary: The City of Denver’s Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create original public artworks for the Sun Valley Neighborhood in Denver. A selection panel of community representatives, arts and culture professionals, and civic leaders has been assembled to identify art opportunities, and to select and recommend an artist or artist team for this project. The selection panel has also identified at least two exterior sites for potential art opportunities and will select one artist or artist team for the allocated total budget

Gardens on Spring Creek Temporary Art Installation Project

Fort Collins, Colorado

Summary: The City of Fort Collins, Colorado, Art in Public Places Program (APP) is seeking submissions to invite artist/artist team to develop art proposals for the Gardens on Spring Creek Temporary Art Installation Project. The intent of this project is to create a 6-8-month temporary art attraction at The Gardens on Spring Creek, the community botanic garden of Fort Collins, Colorado. The selected Artist/team will work with the project team to develop the timeline, final art concept for the site, and will collaborate with the team to ensure care of the natural environment that will host the art piece(s). Artists/teams are required to develop and submit a written concept for the temporary art installation.

Budget: $17,000.

Special Notes: This will be the first art exhibit on site since reopening the facility with 5 new acres of gardens in 2020. Eight concrete sculpture pads are scattered around The Gardens and may be utilized for this project.

Art in Parks

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Summary: The City of Pittsburgh is requesting artist qualifications for the creation of new large-scale works in each of the five Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) parks (Frick, Schenley, Riverview, Emerald View, and Highland). Artists will be selected in spring of 2021 and will develop their project concepts following selection. Installations will begin in fall of 2021 and continue through 2022. They may include object-based sculpture, site-specific installations, and landscape works.

Lexington Market Call for Artists

Baltimore, Maryland

Summary: Baltimore City’s historic Lexington Market is excited to announce two open calls for artists for two permanent, site-specific, integrated artworks for the new Lexington Market plaza.

Budget: Each of the two site-specific, three-dimensional artworks will have a separate budget of $150,000.

San Pedro Creek Five Panel Mural

San Antonio, Texas

Summary: The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority), in partnership with Bexar County, seeks to commission a permanent mural (five panels) for the second segment of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park which is currently under construction. The mural may be rendered in hand-glazed or digitized porcelain tile, glass, ceramic, or stone mosaic tile, or other similar material suitable for the creek environment. The mural will serve as a signature work of art for one of the most culturally significant sections of the park.

Budget: $350,000-$400,000.

Eligibility Requirements: The opportunity is open to all professional artists, age 18 and over and residing in Bexar County, regardless of residence, race, color, religion, national origin, gender, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. It is not required for all team members to reside in Bexar County, however the lead artist who submits the application must reside in Bexar County.

Special Notes: The civil history of San Antonio began with the Presidio de Bexar and Villa de San Fernando, both sustained by the waters of San Pedro Creek. The interweaving of peoples and destinies that formed the foundation of San Antonio and Bexar County, as we know it today, will be the central focus of the mural’s content. To that end, the mural should reference Native Americans, Presidiales, Canary Islanders, Bexarenos/Tejanos, and Texicans.

TRANSITional Art Project

Trenton, New Jersey

Summary: NJ Transit and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are pleased to present the TRANSITional Art Project: Trenton Transit Station Bike Racks Re-craft/Re-envision. All media appropriate to the project will be considered, however, preference is for sturdy metal work or a creative and exciting painting of the racks. Artists must consider that the work will be situated in a public location, and subject to the elements and potential vandalism. 

Budget: The TRANSITional Art Project will provide a $10,000 stipend to the selected artist, which can be used toward project costs and artistic fees as needed.

Eligibility Requirements: visual artist (or artist team), who lives or works in the Central New Jersey Counties of: Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Union, and Hunterdon; who is a current resident of the State of New Jersey. Special Notes: NJ Transit will manage the logistics and labor of de-installing and re-installing the bike racks, with the artist’s assistance for re-installation, as needed.

Sculptural Screening for Lift Stations

Leesburg, Florida

Summary: This is a commissioning of new work by the Leesburg Center for the Arts in partnership with the City of Leesburg. The goal of the project is to use the Public Art Screening to conceal the Lift Stations from view and provide aesthetically pleasing streetscape elements. The artwork should be unique, engaging for passersby, reflective of the community, and not easily scaled. The screening will be placed around several sides of two Lift Stations along a heavily traveled roadway. There are to be 3 screen panels total and each is a different size. The Public Art screening will be placed in front of existing chain link fence enclosures to screen the entirety of the fence encloser and Lift Station. The screen panels are to be free standing. They will not be connected to or lean against the chain link fence.

Budget: $7,500

Eligibility Requirements: This call is open to artists currently residing in the State of Florida with experience in projects of a similar scope and scale.

Special Notes: two sites have been preselected by the commissioning organizations. These sites are highly visible to the public but not open for public entry. The first Lift Station requires one section of screening measuring 22’ L x 8’ H. The second Lift Station requires two sections of screening measuring 27’ L x 8’H.

Prince George’s County Public Art Bus Shelter Pilot

Prince George County, Maryland

Summary: For this public art opportunity, an art piece in the form of a bus shelter will be created that represents stories, culture, and architectural elements distinct to each individual municipality that is included in the pilot. Interested artists or artist teams are allowed to submit an application for 1-2 of the 6 municipalities within this bus shelter public art opportunity.

Budget: The $30,000 project budget will be given to each bus shelter apart of the pilot.

Re-Issue Historic Heart & Soul Park

West Palm Beach, Florida

Summary: Artists/Artists teams are invited to apply to design, fabricate and install unique mosaic style artwork for the gateway walls, benches and undulating walls of the newly created Heart & Soul Park in the Historic Northwest neighborhood.

Budget: $120,000

Special Notes: The selected artist/artist team will create new artwork designs that will be integrated into the gateway walls, undulating walls and benches to create an enhanced pedestrian experience within the park. The design will reflect the aesthetic and character of the cultural history of the area while reflecting the City’s cultural make-up. The selected artist/artist team will be required to work closely with various City departments throughout the project process and other contractors and companies hired by the City for this project.

Temporary Public Art Proposals for Canal Convergence 2021

Scottsdale, Arizona

Summary: Scottsdale Public Art seeks proposals for outdoor, temporary public artworks to be featured in, around, and suspended above the Arizona Canal in Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as in pre-selected sites throughout downtown Scottsdale during Canal Convergence | Water + Art + Light. Canal Convergence will be on view for 10 days, from November 5–14, 2021. Some projects may be selected to stay installed for an additional 1–2 months after the Canal Convergence event dates. This year’s central theme is Art and Technology.

This call is Phase I of II. Phase I asks artists to focus primarily on the project narrative and concept, visuals, and estimated total budget. Once Phase I closes on March 26, 2021, up to 40 proposals will be selected for Phase II.

Budget: $5,000 and $30,000 (USD), with a limited number of larger budgets being awarded to new commissions and/or major works of a larger physical scale. Budget should include all artist fees, travel, insurance, engineering(if applicable), fabrication costs, etc.

FGCU Water Resources Building

Florida Gulf Coast University

Summary: Artwork is sought for a new building on the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) campus. The intent is that this artwork will reflect the mission and focus of this new facility. The Water School is founded in a holistic approach that focuses on the environmental sciences but also draws in the social sciences, health sciences, business and engineering.

Budget: $50,000 total project budget.

Gustavo “Gus” L. Garcia Recreation Center, Phase III

Austin, Texas

Summary: The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program seeks to commission a visual artist, or artist team, to design and install a permanent exterior mural for the Gus Garcia Recreation Center. The community has stated a strong preference for a mural that will serve as a recognizable visual landmark for the Center. They have also communicated an interest in a mural that reflects the Center’s and the surrounding communities’ rich diversity, highlighting its welcoming spirit.

Animal Services Center Public Art Call

Las Cruces, New Mexico

Summary: Las Cruces Public Art (LCPA) seeks an artist or art team to create a site-specific outdoor art piece to promote the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV) which is undergoing a major expansion.  LCPA wishes to commission art that is a beacon to the public and illustrates animals and services of the ASCMV.  The art will be a large, free-standing sculpture installed in front of the new ASCMV facility. 

Budget: Selected artist or art team will be awarded $68,000 to design, fabricate and install the artwork within eight (8) months of signing the contract with the City of Las Cruces.

SPACING OUT(side): Outdoor Art 2021

Jamestown, Rhode Island

Summary: The Jamestown Arts Center is seeking sculptures and installations for its 2021 exhibition season, late June through October 31. The outdoor exhibition entitled Spacing Out(side) will relate to the summer exhibition in the JAC’s main galleries, SPACING OUT: Expanding the Field of Vision, which contextualizes the work of contemporary artists who challenge the limitations of space. In keeping with the main gallery exhibition, we welcome outdoor proposals that engage space in interesting or unusual ways, are original in their construction or use of materials, or offer an unexpected point of view. 

Budget: We are soliciting artwork proposals for the following sites:

1) East Ferry “Christmas Tree” site; Large scale or impactful works up to approximately 12’ tall will be considered. Selected artist will receive a $2,500 honorarium for the loan of the work.

2) Fort Wetherill/Fisheries campus, suitable for a work to be mounted to the existing concrete slab. Selected artist will receive a $1000 honorarium for the loan of the work.

3) Bike Path entry off Eldred Avenue, suitable for a sturdy artwork, installation or project capable of installing without heavy equipment. Selected artist will receive a $1,000 honorarium for the loan or creation of the work.

The Flying Lark: Art Walk

Summary: To celebrate and honor the horse, The Flying Lark, Southern Oregon’s Premier gaming, dining and entertainment destination, is calling on sculptors, welders, glassblowers, muralists and specialists in other mediums to help create a world-class Art Walk in Grants Pass, Oregon that celebrates the magic, power and beauty of horses. The Art Walk will comprise over 20 pieces of bespoke art including sculptures of varying sizes.

Showcasing the magic, power and beauty of horses in as creative and unexpected of ways possible.  From the impact on common daily phrases and language, every day calculations such as horsepower for engines, how we farm, entertain, travel, recreate and beyond.  The horse has had an incredible impact on mankind.  We’re looking for exciting ways to showcase this amazing and impactful animal. 

Budget: Depending on the size and complexity of the work, projects will fall in one of the following budget ranges:

Ash Tree Call

Stevens Point, Wisconsin

Summary: The Stevens Point Sculpture Park needs an artist to reshape our 36” in diameter and 30+ foot high ash tree. Last fall our tree was a victim of the emerald ash borer and instead of bringing it down, we thought we would find someone to give it new life as a work of art.

Public Art Competition Honoring Texas A&M University’s Mascot, Reveille

Summary: Texas A&M University announces an open competition for professional artists or artist teams to commission a site specific public art installation honoring Texas A&M University’s mascot, Reveille, a Rough Collie breed dog. The installation will reside on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas, in a high traffic area outside the university’s football stadium, Kyle Field, and near the resting place of all former Reveille mascots, Reveille Memorial.
