Harriet Tubman and The Battle against Erasure: The Slavery and Freedom Project
Binghamton, New York
Summary: The Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity is excited to announce a special CALL FOR ARTISTS AND SCULPTORS to create and erect a statue of Harriet Tubman on the downtown campus of Binghamton University. Binghamton University is a top ranked public university in New York state dedicated to diversity and inclusion and commemorating the legacy of Harriet Tubman and her multicultural band of conductors. In this the Bicentennial year of her birth, we want to celebrate and draw inspiration from her life as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a soldier and a spy in the US Civil War, a veteran, herbalist and farmer.
The Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity is accepting qualifications from creative individuals including sculptors, landscape architects and engineers to create a commemorative memorial intertwining history, art and landscape.
The selected finalist will be asked to create a permanent commemorative statue and memorial garden on the Downtown Center campus of Binghamton University in the heart of the city of Binghamton. The location in question overlooks the Chenango River.

How to apply: Form on Google Docs
Eligibility Requirements: This is an open call to sculptors or other artists based in the United States. Proposals by artists who have demonstrated abilities in executing creative, durable public art exhibits will be considered.
Special Notes: Our vision for the statue is a figurative rendering; otherwise, artists are free to share their interpretation of Tubman given her biography, the mission of the Tubman Center, the project background and the location on Binghamton University’s campus. Artists could choose to feature Tubman’s tenure as a conductor on the Underground Railroad network but they could also choose to feature Tubman’s environmental orientation (she was known for using medicinal herbs and flowers to treat fevers and other conditions of those in her care) or to emphasize her tenure as a civil war nurse, scout and battalion leader. We leave the interpretation up to each artist who submits a proposal.
The word that captures what we hope to see embodied in this statue is the word INSPIRE. We hope all who view it will be inspired to continue her brave work in the present day.

Summary: Up to ten artworks may be selected and showcased for two years in the heart of Newport Beach in Civic Center Park. The 14-acre, ocean-view site was specially designed by renowned landscape architect Peter Walker as an intended sculpture garden. The Civic Center Park has developed into a destination for residents and visitors to gather for events and activities including summer concerts on the lawn, art shows, docent-led sculpture park tours, visits to the dog park, or leisurely walks along the park’s winding trail, appreciating its environmentally-friendly expanse of native plant life. As home to City Hall, City administrative offices, and the Central Branch of the city’s public library system, the Civic Center is the heart of Newport Beach.
The City seeks a well-balanced exhibit of Public Art emphasizing a variety of styles, types, and sizes; and a diverse pool of artists. The City will determine specific locations for artworks within the Park grounds. Locations are subject to change and the City reserves the right to relocate sculptures in the exhibition to alternate sites within Civic Center Park without notice and at its sole discretion.
