Call for Artists: Opportunities for Sculptors

MLK JR Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monument
Atlanta, GA
Summary: The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for a site-specific statue of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. that will be installed near the entryway of MLK Drive at Northside Drive in Atlanta, Georgia (opposite the Mercedes-Benz Stadium). The artwork will be 380 feet from the entryway to the 7.2 mile east-west corridor that connects points of interest such as the new Mercedes Benz Stadium, the Atlanta University Center, the Atlanta BeltLine, Westview Cemetery, and several MARTA bus stops. The sculpture foundation, design and construction costs including lighting must be integrated into the budget of the artist selected.
Budget: $350,000.00 The all inclusive budget will include all artist fees, engineering, fabrication, foundations, lighting, pedestal design build, installation, insurance, permitting, and travel costs

Eligibility Requirements: The City of Atlanta is seeking applicants who are professional bronze sculptors with portfolios that demonstrate monumental scale bronze portrait sculptures. The artist portfolio will demonstrate portraiture that has a likeness to the subject matter. All applicants, regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability will be considered.
Special Notes: It is contemplated that the term of the contract shall be for a period not to exceed twelve (12) months for the design and fabrication services required

MLK JR Dr. Gateway at Northside Drive
Atlanta, GA
Summary: The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for a site-specific Gateway artwork that will span the width of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, installed 170 feet from the intersection Northside Drive in Atlanta, Georgia (opposite the Mercedes-Benz Stadium). The artwork will be 170 feet from the entryway to the 7.2 mile east-west corridor that connects points of interest such as the new Mercedes Benz Stadium, the Atlanta University Center, the Atlanta BeltLine, Westview Cemetery, and several MARTA bus stops. The sculpture foundation, design and construction costs including lighting must be integrated into the budget of the artist selected.

Eligibility Requirements: The City of Atlanta is seeking applicants who are professional architects, designers or artists with portfolios that demonstrate monumental scale public art, and managing large public art projects. The portfolio will demonstrate ability to execute architectural work with an artistic design. All applicants, regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability will be considered.

CITY OF SAN JOSE PARKING GARAGE FACADE ENHANCEMENT
San Jose, CA
Summary: The City of San José Public Art Program in conjunction with the City of San José Department of Transportation’s Parking and Downtown Operations Division are seeking an experienced artist or artist-led team to develop an artwork that addresses the exterior façade of the Market/San Pedro Street Parking Garage in downtown San José. The garage is a prominent facility in San Jose’s downtown core and adjacent to the vibrant San Pedro Square commercial district, a popular destination for dining, retail and other activities day and night. The goal is for an enhancement that has a visual presence 24 hours a day.
Budget: $600,000, for design, fabrication and installation, and a mandatory contingency

Eligibility Requirements:
This opportunity is open to individual artists or artist-led teams working and living in the United States. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal of qualifications. If submitting as a team, a professional artist must be the lead team member.
In most cases, artists currently under contract for an art project with the City of San José Public Art Program are not eligible to apply for this project unless their current project will be complete by April 2018, or the project is currently suspended with no proposed re-activation date. Special Notes: As public art, this creative placemaking project is part of San José’s ongoing Illuminating Downtown program and is intended to strengthen the neighborhood identity in part through the creative use of illumination. Key goals for this project include: 1) to enhance the facility, and the vibrancy and character of the area, and enliven the streetscape through use of illumination and other possible elements; 2) to also increase safety, visibility, and to encourage active use of the parking facility at all hours; and, 3) engage residents, business owners and visitors in this vibrant downtown district and, where relevant, in participatory aspects of the design process.
