Call for Artists Ring in New Year (UPDATED AGAIN!)

Wow, what a year we had in 2021. There were so many opportunities for sculptors with a wide variety of call for artists each month. Here’s to starting off 2022 with a big bang and hopefully provide even more artists opportunities to participate in shows, art on loan programs, and of course, commissions!

We are starting January 2022 with 20 call for artists–some with more than one opportunity. These first calls have deadlines through Jan 17. We will be adding more soon, so keep checking back

Benton Boulevard bridge over Brush Creek rehabilitation

Kansas City, Missouri

Summary: The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist, or artist team, to design art for the rehabilitation of Benton Boulevard bridge over Brush Creek. Artistic elements may include lighting, entry features, or railing. All artistic elements must comply with the 2018 International Building Code.

Budget: $100,000

Deadline: Sunday January 2, 2022, 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time Zone.

Eligibility Requirements: Eligibility is limited to professional visual artist teams or artists at least 18 years of age based in the Kansas City Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The Kansas City CSA includes the Missouri counties of Andrew, Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, DeKalb, Jackson, Lafayette, Platte, Ray and the Kansas counties of Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami, Wyandotte. Artists based in the Kansas City area but not within one of the above counties can appeal their eligibility within their Letter of Interest. All eligibility appeals will be determined by a majority vote of the selection panel.

Special Notes: Artists who have completed a City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art commission within two years of their project’s final acceptance date are not eligible.

Pocket Park Community Sculpture Project

The Dalles, Oregon

Summary: The intent of the project is to create a focal piece for a pocket park under development by the Arts and Design Committee and City of The Dalles’ Beautification Committee. The location of the sculpture will be a 43’ x 34’ section at the Southwest corner of Second Street and Washington Street

Budget: $15,000

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must live or have lived in The Columbia River Gorge between Cascade Locks and Rufus within 50 miles of the Columbia River on either the Oregon or Washington side of the river. Preference will be give to applicants currently living in the Gorge.

Special Notes: The Dalles Mayor will review submission materials and select up to three finalists to interview for the commission and submit a design with a $250 stipend to support the artist. Peoples’ Forge Project representatives will meet with the three finalists in person or via Zoom for an interview, concept review and explanation of the fabrication process. The selected artist will receive a total award of $1000 to complete the design and collaborate with People’s Forge Project. Funds will be distributed on a clearly defined schedule.

2022 Downtown Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit

Olathe, Kansas

Summary: The City of Olathe is seeking large-scale, three-dimensional sculpture entries for our 2022 Downtown Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. The City of Olathe’s Downtown Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, a juried sculpture competition, has annually brought a rotating display of sculpture from regional and national artists since 2004. The goal of the program is to activate Olathe’s original town core area, connect people to the community, and celebrate the community’s love for the arts.

Budget: Artists will receive a $2,500 honorarium for each work selected for a one-year lease.

Alabama Women’s Tribute Statue Commission Statues for Rosa Parks and Helen Keller

Montgomery, Alabama

Summary: Rosa Parks and Helen Keller are exemplary figures of Alabama’s history of determination and passion. Rosa Parks’ bravery in the face of the Montgomery Bus Boycott has inspired not only Alabamians–but also people around the world–to fight for justice in the face of inequality and discrimination. Similarly, Helen Keller learned to communicate, even in light of her inabilities to both see and hear. Her unique story of overcoming massive social and developmental hurdles has served as an inspiration for people with disabilities and has offered a lesson for all in the capabilities of the human spirit. The legacies of these two women will forever be a vital part of the story of the state of Alabama.

In order to preserve the legacies of these women and to honor their inspiring stories, Alabama Act 2019-178 created the Alabama Women’s Tribute Statue Commission (“AWTSC”) to fund, commission, and place statues of Rosa Parks and Helen Keller on the grounds of the Alabama State Capitol.

Special Notes: The AWTSC will review all applications and will select up to three artists for follow-up interviews for each statue. The semi-finalist artists will receive $2,000 as a stipend to create and present a design proposal in the form of a maquette. Out-of-town artists will be reimbursed for pre-approved travel expenses in accordance with IRS regulations so that they may attend both a site visit and proposal presentation in Montgomery.

Lemmon Ave Streetscape Enhancements Art Projects

Dallas, Texas

Summary: The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Arts & Culture requests the submission of qualifications from artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install a work of public art at the intersections of 1) Lemmon Ave and Shorecrest Dr and 2) Lemmon Ave at Lovers Ln. as part of the Lemmon Ave Streetscape Enhancements Projects.

Budget: $94,00 for two locations ($47,000 for each site)

Eligibility Requirements: All professional artists with a demonstrated record of successful completion of artwork at a similar cost and scale are eligible to apply. Undergraduate students are not eligible and artists must be at least 18 years old.

Special Notes: The Artist Selection panel will review qualified submissions. A short list of up to three artists or artist-teams will be identified and contracted to develop a site-specific concept design for artwork.  The artist or artist-team selected for the short list will receive a stipend of $1,000 to cover the costs of producing a site-specific public art concept proposal for both locations.

Young Family Athletic Center Public Art Project

Norman, Oklahoma

Summary: Norman Arts Council on behalf of The City of Norman and Norman Forward Percent for Art for the Young Family Athletic Center, is seeking an artist (or team of artists) to create a significant work of art for the Young Family Athletic Center.

The Selection Panel has determined that ideally the most effective artwork will be a monumental, exterior piece, but alternatively would consider artwork in the interior of the building.

The chosen artwork should express the qualities and spirit inherent in athletics such as kinetic energy and movement which are attributes of all the sports offered at the Young Family Athletic Center. The artwork should be very visible to all of the people who use the space, including Norman citizens, youth team athletes, parents, spectators, participants and their families from around the region who are there for events and tournaments, and staff.

Summary: This call for artists includes one of multiple unique project opportunities across the Warner development in Santa Ana, CA. At the driveway entrance off of Red Hill Ave there is a prime opportunity to install ground level sculptures or active installation. This is primarily a traffic entrance, but pedestrians will be moving through the area from retail to markethall/restaurants – so the ideal artwork for this space should be work large enough visually for visibility as cars pass by, and engaging for pedestrian traffic as well. Ground level sculpture, potential LED or digital artwork an option.

Primary Landmark Installation – The Warner

Santa Ana, California

Summary: This call for artists includes one of multiple unique project opportunities across the Warner development in Santa Ana, CA. The goal is to deliver engaging, expressive, and diverse artworks to the Warner, activating a connected campus, and promoting the diversity of culture and creativity within the Santa Ana community.

At the corner of Warner and RedHill there is an ideal location to install a major landmark artwork. The goal of this commission will be to act as a beacon for the project both from a street view as well as at a more human level.
This artwork should be large enough to command attention and be a visual presence, but also engaging enough that residents and visitors can utilize the artwork as a point of activation and engagement.

An artwork that functions as touch point and can actively engage visitors is preferred.

Southern Utah University Academic Facility

Cedar City, Utah

Summary: Letters of interest and qualifications are requested from artists interested in creating site specific art for a public area of the new Southern Utah University Academic Classroom Building in Cedar City, Utah. The Committee has identified an interior site located towards the north entry as a gateway for the primary student entrance. The Committee hopes this site specific work will, like the building design, help create an inviting and welcoming vibe and feel for the space as students make their way towards the “geek bar,” and other study areas.

Summary: The South Haven Center for the Arts, in partnership with the South Haven Visitor’s Bureau, the Downtown Development Authority and the City of South Haven, is seeking proposals for sculptural and functional bike racks that are playful and memorable. This is a design and build project that requires the artist to deliver one uniquely designed and completed commercial-grade, welded metal bike rack for the City to install. Artists may use a fabricator of their choice or fabricate their own sculpture.

Summary: ArtScape Hendersonville is an annually changing, outdoor public-arts project that enriches the appeal of Hendersonville. Forty banners displaying the original artwork of Henderson County artists are hung on Main Street, the downtown avenues, and the Historic 7th Avenue District. Artwork may be 2D, 3D, fine crafts, or photography.

Harlow Park Art

Summary: The South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s Public Art Committee (PAC) requests proposals for permanent artwork to be placed at South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s (SSPRD) Harlow Park

The proposed art 1) should be appropriate for the surrounding family focused uses; 2) should be an integral part of the site in theme, materials, and scale; 3) should be unique, and be thoughtfully integrated into the existing environment; 4) must meet or exceed standards for structural integrity and durability; 5) must be weather, vandal, and graffiti resistant; 6) and must meet or exceed standards for public safety. Although not a requirement, the PAC encourages proposals to engage youth artists of the District in the development of any submissions. Submissions may include existing artist-owned work if appropriate for the site.

Summary: The goal of the selected artwork is to speak to and inform about the work being done within the DOTD. The artwork should also complement the building and surrounding space. Destination Clare: Art Sculpture Walk

Clare, Michigan

Summary: The Clare County Arts Council welcomes all artists to apply to have your art sculpture featured as one of ten pieces. The selection committee will choose the top ten entries based upon artistic merit, creativity, public safety and durability in an outdoor setting. Finalists will be notified by February 28th with sculptures installed on May 10th. The exhibit will run May 10, 2022 through April 2023.

Budget: $10,000. a jury will be assembled to award $2500 for the Best of Show which will be awarded at an Opening Event the evening after all art has been installed. The People’ Choice award ($1,000) will be given to the piece that receives the most votes from exhibit attendees. This will be awarded in January 2023 and will be the featured exhibit on promotional materials for the following year. Additionally, finalists are eligible for an Honorarium ($750) that will be paid out within 30 days after the art has been installed.

Sculpture Space Residency

Utica, New York

Summary: Sculpture Space, located in Utica, New York invites artists whose focus is sculpture to apply for a two-month residency between February and November 2023. We offer a 5,500 square foot shared studio with specialized equipment in addition to six semi-private studios. The Studio Manager provides ongoing assistance and technical expertise; and is available to assist with any other special requirements. Basic understanding and communication skills in English are necessary.

Up to six artists are in residence for each of the four distinct cohorts each year (Feb/Mar, Apr/May, Jul/Aug and Oct/Nov) ; artists are expected to stay for a full two months. Housing is provided a block away in a newly renovated residence with private bedrooms, washer/dryer, internet, shared living space and kitchen. Artists are responsible for materials, specialized tools and food. Bicycles are provided; transport for materials purchase and other needs is also available.

Artaxis Fellowship

Summary: The sixth annual Artaxis Fellowship will award two ceramicists up to $2,000 to fund a two-week summer workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Applicants can be at any stage of their careers.

Nashville Tree Project

Nashville, Tennessee

Summary: Nashville Tree Foundation (NTF), in collaboration with Metro Parks and Metro Arts, is seeking experienced artists and artist teams to give ash trees in Nashville parks a new life. Ash trees comprise approximately 10% of Nashville’s total tree canopy and are under threat from the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle. The sculpture project will help raise awareness to the pending loss of these trees.

This RFP seeks an experienced artist (or artist team) to turn the tree into a sculpture:  beautiful, original, unique works of art that will become a distinguishing feature in the neighborhood. The approach can be additive and/or subtractive. The trees will be approximately 10-25 ft. tall and may include main side branches. This exhibition is modeled after the Chicago Tree Project; past and current projects can be viewed at www.chicagotreeproject.org.

Eligibility Requirements: For this RFP, each artist should submit qualifications that address projects of similar scale. We are looking for evidence that the artist is comfortable working with the appropriate equipment and at heights required for this project. A Memorial for Survivors of Sexual Abuse in the Church

Moorhead, Minnesota

Summary: We envision an installation of a work of art that gives voice to the pain of sexual violence and betrayed trust as well as to the hope for healing. The primary audience would be the survivors themselves, with church members and others being a secondary audience. This art will be used by congregations, synod offices and other ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The memorial should be replicable by the artist in the price range described above.

Budget: $3,000- $4,000 for each initial piece

2022 Sculpture on the Move!

Manchester, Missouri

Summary: We are now accepting applications for the 2022 round of Sculpture on the Move where we will install approximately 20 sculptures for prominent display in outdoor, public areas across the region. These sculptures will be installed in the spring of 2022 for a period of two years, at which point artists can resubmit their work to be selected for another location within the regional display. Artists may submit multiple works and may have multiple works selected across the participating communities.

Each of our 20 municipalities/communities will select at least one sculpture from the pool of submissions. After the selection, a representative from that community will work directly with the artist to finalize the contract, payment schedule, as well as delivery and installation dates.

Budget: The winning artists will be awarded $1,000 per year for two years, for each sculpture selected, resulting in a total of $2,000 per sculpture.

ArtAround Roswell Sculpture Tour 2022

Summary: Roswell Arts Fund and the City of Roswell, Georgia invites artists to submit proposals of existing and new outdoor art works for consideration for ArtAround Roswell 2022, a Sculpture Tour; a temporary, monumental sculptural art installation to be installed at various outdoor sites in the City of Roswell, Georgia. Proposals selected through this call will be considered for exhibition during an 11-month tour from May 2022 – April 2023.

Downtown Sculpture Walk

Lee’s Summit, Missouri

Summary: The City of Lee’s Summit (MO) Cultural Arts Division is accepting applications for the 2022 Downtown Sculpture Walk temporary sculpture exhibit. Sculptures must be available for exhibition between mid-May 2022 through at least April 30, 2023. Up to ten (10) artists will be selected to install 3D sculptural works appropriate for long-term outdoor display. Selected artwork may be installed at any of the designated locations in Downtown Lee’s Summit that includes concrete pads and open space grassy areas. The jury selection committee will determine the final location of each sculpture. Artwork may be installed on concrete slabs or grassy areas.

Budget: Selected artists will receive a stipend of $1,000 to offset costs associated with installation, travel and per diem.

Bowie State University MLK Jr. Communications Arts & Humanities building Call for Public Art (RFQ)

Baltimore, Maryland

Summary: Bowie State University, a member institution of the University System of Maryland and the state’s oldest Historically Black University, is building the new Martin Luther King Jr. Communication Arts & Humanities building (CAH). Through this Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process, managed by the Maryland State Arts Council’s Public Art Across Maryland program, artists (or artist teams) will be invited to develop concept proposals for a new and original public artwork to be featured prominently at the new building. The MLK Jr. CAH building is being designed by Perkins and Will and is expected to open in Fall 2024.

Summary: This Request for Qualifications seeks to identify a qualified individual artist or artist team who will be commissioned to develop a new site-specific and responsive work of public art for the New Academic Building & Auditorium Project at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The selected artist or team will be tasked with designing, fabricating, and installing an artwork that functions as a public landmark and entry point while responding to the unique setting, history, and relationship to the environment present throughout St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus. Up to four qualified semi-finalists will be selected from the respondents to this RFQ. Selected semi-finalists will be provided stipends to develop site-specific concept proposals for artwork.

NJ Climate Resilience Public Art Projects 2022

New Jersey

Summary: The New Jersey DEP Coastal Management Program (CMP)was awarded a Project of Special Merit (PSM) grant by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through their annual Coastal Zone Management Enhancement Program. The PSM award is to support development of a risk communication campaign for coastal hazards including a Community-Based Art Grant Program (Grant Program) in partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (Arts Council). The Grant Program, along with the other components of the risk communications campaign, will address the need to involve and inform the public about the coastal hazards impacts they will face and what actions they can take to reduce their risk.

The Grant Program has selected three (3) New Jersey community-based organizations (CBO’s) to be paired with artists that specialize in environmental topics to create art installations in specific locations within New Jersey’s coastal zone. The CBOs were selected through a separate and competitive process, and this call for artists is to select the three artists, or artist teams, who will be paired with the CBO’s to develop and implement an art project that is both artistically excellent, and communicates to the public coastal hazards impacts, risks and actions that can be taken to reduce the risk of climate impacts.  

Budget: Each CBO was eligible for funding, of which $7,000 will be provided to the artist for reimbursement of materials and development and presentation of the art installation selected.

Yokna Sculpture Trail

Oxford, Mississippi

Summary: Yokna Sculpture Trail, provides between 15 and 20 large-scale sculptures connecting the campus and community. The program selects approximately half its exhibition annually which rotates on a staggered exhibition schedule. The sculptures selected for 2022 will be exhibited in four distinct locations throughout Oxford, MS from April 2022 to March 2024.

Theatre in the Park Temporary Art Project

Summary: An artist or artist team is sought to design, fabricate, and install a temporary artwork at the entrance of Theatre in the Park, located within Shawnee Mission Park. Theatre in the Park is the largest outdoor community theatre in the country celebrating its 52nd year of theatre. Summary: EDENS, a leading national retail real estate owner, operator and developer, seeks an artist to design, fabricate and install sculptural public seating for Oakwood Square in Boynton Beach, Florida. EDENS will remove existing parking spaces to provide a resting & waiting area adjacent to outdoor dining. The artist-made seating will provide the unique feature and selfie spot for the shopping plaza.

RFQ for Public Art: City of Davis F Street Wall

Summary: This public art piece will be the final phase of a recent transportation improvement project that includes a new multi-use path that extends from the Southwest corner of the recently developed “Cannery” neighborhood, under the Covell Boulevard overcrossing at the railroad tracks and then up to the existing path on the south side of Covell Boulevard. The improvements include a new connection on the east side of the overcrossing from the existing path to the Cannery development with ADA access, retaining walls and lighting design.

Selected proposals will align with project goals to create a safe and positive space at this intersection: a highly visible location where many community assets and landmarks meet. The selected artist will demonstrate quality and originality, with a style that beautifully enhances the newly improved corner and public space.

Rowlett Fire Station #2

Summary: The City of Rowlett Arts & Humanities Commission seeks to commission an original, exterior, site-specific, functionally, philosophically, and artistically integrated space for Rowlett Fire Station #2, which opened for service on October 9, 2021. This new facility, located at 8602 Schrade Road, contains a state-of-the- art emergency operations center and training room. Fire Chief Neil Howard expects the building to service the City of Rowlett for 50 years. There is space directly in front of the west-end of the building, adjacent to the parking lot, for art.

Budget: The budget for this project is not to exceed $48,000, including artist’s fee, travel during fabrication and installation, engineering certification, materials, fabrication, transportation, documentation, insurance, applicable permit fees, and lighting.

2022 Historic Sheridan Wyoming Juried Sculpture Exhibit

Sculpture Evergreen Sculpture Walk 2022

Evergreen, Colorado

Summary:

Sculpture Evergreen has established a program of public art acquisition to beautify open spaces and public buildings in Evergreen, CO, in the foothills west of Denver. A critical component of Sculpture Evergreen’s mission is the annual Sculpture Walk.

Initiated in 1999, this is a juried exhibition of up to 16 large sculptures suitable for OUTDOOR DISPLAY. All works must be original. Sculptures will be on display for 1 year until June 2, 2023.

Sculptures must be soundly and professionally constructed to withstand wind gusts up to 75 mph which are common in Evergreen. Sculptures must have a steel mounting plate for welding to a pedestal, have another suitable attachment method, or be of sufficient weight and durability that the sculpture can be safely and securely placed on the ground without toppling, or being removed in an unauthorized fashion. Sculptures must be at least 4 feet tall to be eligible. Many of our sites demand larger sculptures, and pieces standing between 4-12 feet in height have the best chance of being chosen.

Budget: A stipend of $700 will be awarded for each accepted sculpture. In addition, there is a Juried Award of $1000 for artistic excellence

Community Artist in Residence (CAIR)

Glen Ellyn, Illinois

Summary: College of DuPage visual art programs invite artists to apply for a residency working with our students. Artists will propose a detailed timeline for a residency project that will span 2 to 8 weeks with several date options between April 4 and June 28, 2022 or September 1 and November 19, 2022. Proposals must engage our student body with the option to include broader forms of community engagement and explain how the artists will work closely with one or more classes for a minimum of 6 hours over the course of the residency. While residents will be working primarily with art students, potential interdisciplinary connections and research across other fields of study are encouraged.

Budget: Selected artists will receive stipends up to $3500 which may be used to cover materials, travel, lodging, etc.
