Conducting the Marble Quarry

Quarrying Marble Requires an Orchestra and Excellent Conductor

Stone quarries are amazing places. Filmmaker Yuri Ancarani found the marble quarry in particular to be so spectacular he made a documentary of the process.

Watching this short clip of the film, Il Capo (the Chief), you can see the quarry boss conducting his supporting cast with small movements of his hands.

“I was so taken by the chief, watching him work,” says Ancarani… . “How he can move gigantic marble blocks using enormous excavators, but his own movements are light, precise and determined.”

The choreography of quarrying stone is so fascinating. It will make anyone who has ever carved a sculpture stand back in awe.
