March Call for Artists-part 1

Announcing 16 call for artists with deadlines March 1-10, 2023. Art festivals, art on loan programs and commissions are all opportunities for sculptors this month. Check them out and get your applications in.

Uproar Festival of Public Art–DEADLINE EXTENDED

North Carolina

Summary: Uproar Festival of Public Art is a new arts festival coming to North Carolina July 14 – August 12, 2023. High-impact, bold works of art will be showcased throughout Orange County, in the downtown communities of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. Sixty works will be selected for display and $27,500 in cash prizes awarded.

Budget: A $500 honorarium for each selected applicant

Eligibility Requirements: Artists must be 18 years old and a resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia.

Special Notes: Sales opportunity: artists are encouraged to sell their work during Uproar. Sales, including tax payments, will be handled by the Orange County Arts Alliance (the nonprofit partner of the Orange County Arts Commission). The Arts Alliance will retain a 20% commission on any work sold during the festival.

Hampden Avenue Median Art Call

Englewood, Colorado

Summary: The Cultural Arts Commission of Englewood in tandem with the City of Englewood invites local artists to apply for the following 2022-2023 Public Art Project: Englewood Median Art Call – Hampden Avenue Median(s). This opportunity is for small-medium size art, both new or existing pieces. This is the first of a series of median art calls. It is an opportunity to add vibrancy and a sense of place to a growing and ever-changing Englewood.

The piece will include the installation of a large-format (no more than 7’ tall by 4 ‘ wide) art/sculpture piece at the median on Hampden and Huron Street.  This artwork will be the first of its kind since the commissioning of Virere by Lawrence Argent at the Yale & Broadway median in Englewood.

Budget: $30,000

Eligibility Requirements: This project is open to any individual or team of artists who have the vision and skills required to complete the project to the highest standards of innovation and technical expertise. As a way to engage the residents of Englewood, preference for the art will be considered for applicants who live in Englewood although all are encouraged to apply. Walk of Art 2023

Elk Rapids, Michigan

Summary: Art Rapids is seeking Artist applications for original sculptures of a size, weight, and material suited to an outdoor park setting. The sculptures will be exhibited at the Elk Rapids Day Park, owned by Antrim County and located in Elk Rapids, Michigan. Sculptures created with commercial molds, patterns, kits, copies, etc. are ineligible. Selected works will demonstrate the intimate connections between art, place, and the natural environment.

Budget: Upon successful installation, Art Rapids will pay the Artist a stipend of $600.

Special Notes: The sculpture will be on display continuously for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years; however the exact time period (“loan period”) will be at the sole discretion of Art Rapids and is subject to the sale rights of the Artist explained in this Agreement. The loan period will begin on the date installation is completed.

City of Cedar Park 50th Anniversary Sculpture

Cedar Park, Texas

Summary: The City of Cedar Park was incorporated in 1973 and this year, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. To celebrate the City’s 50th anniversary, the City is seeking to commission an original sculpture to commemorate this significant milestone. The City will be installing the sculpture at the Cedar Park Sculpture Garden and will unveil it at the annual Taste of Cedar Park event in October.

Budget: up to $25,000

Eligibility Requirements: The City will accept entries of original designs for large scale, free standing and interactive sculptures and welcomes all artists- professional, amateur and student. All designs must include steel tabs or plates attached to the bottom of the sculpture so that it can be securely bolted to a concrete platform.

AOTM 3D 2023

Longmont, Colorado

Summary: The Art in Public Places Commission is seeking to display unique, original artwork of a diverse range. All artwork must be size/scale appropriate to available space; work will be installed in predetermined spaces selected by the panel. No additional lighting will be provided for any of the artwork. Artwork must be appropriate for public display, and will not be considered if the work could be interpreted as offensive, religious, or political in nature.

Budget: Select artists will receive a stipend of $1,000 per piece

Rialto Theater Acoustic Artwork

Loveland, Colorado

Summary: Loveland Art in Public Places (AIPP) seeks an artist or design team to create sound-diffusing artwork on a wall in the Devereaux Room at the Rialto Theater. The intent of this project is to manage the sound in the room and create a visually appealing focal point. The room is multi-functional, and the artwork will be on the west wall, usually the backdrop for presentations, a retractable screen is also sometimes lowered in front of it. The surface area is 37’ 3” L x 10’ 3” H x 5” D. The total square footage for this project is approximately 370 sq. ft. 

Budget: $6,000

Artwork for the new CTA State and Lake Elevated Station

Chicago, Illinois

Summary: The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) invite professional artists and artist teams with a demonstrated history of completing complex, permanent, outdoor public art projects to submit their qualifications for a $750,000 public art commission for the new CTA State and Lake Station to be built on the Loop elevated tracks at the intersection of State and Lake Streets in downtown Chicago. Construction is scheduled to begin in Summer 2023.

This public art opportunity is for a suite of objects to be located at specified sites on the passenger platforms and crossover.

Budget: $750,000

Finalists will be paid a $2,500 honorarium to develop proposals.

Special Notes: Acceptable media for the artwork are stainless steel, galvanized steel, bronze, laminated art glass panels, ceramic or other durable materials pending review and approval. Artworks must be fabricated and finished to allow routine power washing and withstand damage from general public interaction.

Tempe Public Art: Call for portable interactive art

Tempe, Arizona

Summary: The City of Tempe invites professional artists to submit qualifications and proposals to weave creative play throughout the city. We are looking to commission artists who will create interactive artworks, imaginative games, or creative engagements that can travel throughout the Tempe community during the 2023-24 season of events. This opportunity requires an artist who can create a work of art that will enliven the imaginations of all who encounter it and actively encourage their participation.

Budget: Budget is $150,000 (to be split between 2-5 artists).

Deadline: March 8 at 11:59 p.m. (MST).

Eligibility Requirements: open to a professional artist or artist teams. Artists must be eligible to work in the United States. Artists whose portfolio examples demonstrate the ability to work with both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional installation and who have proven experience working within public spaces will be considered for this commission.

Special Notes: The selected artist(s) will be asked to create an artwork that is able to move to new locations (think pop up art experiences). The focus of the artwork should be on providing the audience with the opportunity to engage directly and imaginatively with a work of art.

Longview Park Sculpture

Greeley, Colorado

Summary: One sculpture, or a series of sculptures, will be purchased and installed in late spring or early summer of 2023. All forms of media and styles are acceptable that are site-appropriate and require little or no maintenance. Sculptures must withstand Colorado’s weather extremes. Being located in a kid friendly environment, we will not accept artwork that could be confused as a playground or natural play elements. Submissions that appear to invite climbing or vandalism will not be considered.

Budget: up to $20,000

16th St Renovation Art

Greeley, Colorado

Summary: A four-block area of 16th St between 7th Ave and 11th Ave. will be renovated.  The primary focus of the street improvements will be focused on the two blocks from 8th to 10th Avenues.  Note that the north edge of the University of Northern Colorado campus abuts this improvement corridor between 10th and 11th Avenues, while an historic canal (the No. 3 Ditch) angles to the corridor between 8th and 9th Avenues.  A major “Uptown Tree” installation accents the 8th Avenue corridor from 16th Street north to and through Downtown.  The UNC campus has monumentation at key edges of the campus, blue and gold themed street furniture and landscaping and banners attached to light poles along key pedestrian pathways; its mascot is a bear.

Call for Artists – Sculptures

Pflugerville, Texas

Summary: The City of Pflugerville seeks to purchase existing, original sculpture works of art or commission new original sculpture works of art by professional visual artists or artist teams for installation at various city facilities. The sculptures must be suitable for an outdoor environment. For interested professional artists, please submit your existing original works of art for consideration and/or design proposal(s) for new original works of art, resumes, references, and statements of interest in completing this project.

Budget: $10,000 per sculpture

Arapahoe Community College – Health Sciences Annex Building

Littleton, Colorado

Summary: Qualifications are requested from artists or artist teams interested in creating a public artwork or artworks for the Health Sciences Annex building addition and renovation project at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado.

The committee is looking for artworks that address one or more of four potential locations within the Health Innovation Center within the Annex building.  Each of the four locations have wall-mounted opportunities and three have ceiling-hung locations available for artworks. The building cannot accommodate three-dimensional, sculptural artworks.

Budget: $64,500

Pracht Wetland Park

Wichita, Kansas

Summary: The City of Wichita is seeking a qualified artist to work with the project design team consisting of RDG Planning & Design, KPFF and Alvine Engineering to incorporate a public art piece into Phase Three of the Pracht Wetlands Park located at 9926 W 29th St. N, 67205. Phase Three of the park is expected to open in the Summer of 2024. The artwork for the project is expected to be installed in the Spring of 2024. Pracht Wetlands Park sits on land once used by the Pracht family for farming and hunting. The Pracht family donated the land to the City of Wichita to preserve the area for future generations to enjoy. At Pracht Wetland Park, water serves as the driving connection between the site’s history, the surrounding community and commercial development. The design for the park draws on the idea that water is not an object to be looked at but rather something to experience in a tactile way.  Interpretive panels incorporated in the first phase of the park construction help tell the story of the flora and fauna found at the park. Public Art Project at Gene Lynch Urban Park

Silver Spring, Maryland

Summary: Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking artist submissions to create a public art installation in suburban Washington, DC. The project will be the focal point of the new Gene Lynch Urban Park in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. The selected art will be installed on a 10-foot by 13-foot concrete wall in the park. Artists or art teams who are selected as finalists for the project will be compensated for their work.

Percent For Art Sculpture at the Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library

Philadelphia, PA

Summary: This public art project will be an outdoor sculptural representation of Blanche A. Nixon on the library grounds, near the Cobbs Creek Parkway and Baltimore Ave corner. The purpose of this Percent for Art opportunity is to create a beautiful and enduring work of public art that is permanent, site-specific, and reflects the culture, values, and diversity of the Cobbs Creek community. An important goal for this public art project will be to honor the life and legacy of Blanche A. Nixon, the community activist for whom the library is named. Artists will be encouraged to interpret Blanche A. Nixon’s story and the history and culture of Cobbs Creek in meaningful and engaging ways, using materials that are appropriate and durable for exterior use.

Eligibility Requirements: The City of Philadelphia’s Percent for Art program invites all interested artists or artist teams to apply for this public art commission. Priority will be given to artists or artist teams who reflect the diversity of the Cobbs Creek community, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and female artists or artist teams are strongly encouraged to apply. Qualified local artists or artist teams who live or work in the community around the Blanche A Nixon library will also be prioritized for this opportunity, but any artist may apply.

Love in Action: Joy, Community, Creativity

Worcester, Massachusetts

Summary: Art in the Park, Worcester in partnership with the Arts and Business Council of Boston and the City of Worcester’s Parks Department presents “Love in Action: Joy, Community, Creativity”, AIPW  2023 Exhibition.  Since 2008 a dedicated volunteer committee of cultural arts presenters, sculptors and community supporters have presented this juried exhibition. AIP was one of six projects to receive the Gold Star Award in 2009 – a statewide award given by the Massachusetts Cultural Council to recognize exemplary cultural programs funded by a local cultural council and in 2017 received Gateway Cities’ Innovation award. The exhibit continues in Elm Park, a National Registry public park with both Olmsted designed and inspired elements.

Budget: Exhibitors accepted to exhibit and install at Elm Park will each receive a $800.00 stipend. One stipend per artist regardless of number of pieces accepted at Elm Park.

Eligibility Requirements: All practicing US sculptors of medium to large-scale works are eligible to apply. 

Special Notes: In addition to Elm Park, four sculptures or installations will be selected for display at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA. Additional sites may include Worcester Academy and UMASS Medical University. These additional display opportunities take place at the beginning, during or at the end of the exhibition period and may include an artist talk at the receiving institution. The stipends at these sites range from $400.00 to $800.00.
