Clapp Park – Public Art

Wichita, Kansas

Summary: The City of Wichita envisions a monolithic, kid-friendly entry feature that serves as a meeting place, beacon and iconic structure located at the entrance of the playground. This artwork will be colorful, whimsical, monumental, and could provide opportunities for shade, and shadows. It could come in the form of a totem, mosaic, polycarbonate and steel structure, ceramic, stone, wood or any suitable material for longevity and minimal maintenance. It must be durable and structurally indestructible, holding up to Kansas winds, hot summers, freezing winters and curious, inquisitive, boisterous children.

Nature is our overarching theme based on the natural beauty of the park, its majestic trees, abundant wildlife, and flowing life-giving creek.

Commissioned Public Art Piece

Sparks, Nevada

Summary: The ACAC is seeking portfolios from artists or artist teams interested in designing and fabricating a large-scale piece of public art to be installed in the Victorian Avenue Cultural District that represents the character and identity of the City of Sparks. The ACAC is looking to commission an artist/artist team to design, fabricate, and install a large-scale sculpture on an existing concrete pad adjacent to the public sidewalk. The existing concrete pad can incorporate water and electricity into the artwork, but this is not a requirement. Goals of the art installation are to create a gathering space in the downtown core, as well as articulate the cultural identity of our city.

Joseph P. Martínez Park

Denver, Colorado

Summary: The Denver Public Art Program is seeking to commission an artist or a team of artists to design a unique public art experience for Joseph (Joe) P. Martínez Park in Denver, CO.

The selection panel, deeply invested in cultural diversity and local history, aims to create a gathering space that is inclusive, accessible and engaging. The artwork should encapsulate the spirit, bravery and courage of Private Martínez, and importantly, it should be experienced with multiple senses, offering a deeper, more immersive connection. The intent of this project, however, is not to be a direct representation or a memorial to Private Martínez. The goal is to draw from the inspiration of his values and life.

Ragdale Tree Project Residency: Diversity of Birds

Lake Forest

Summary: Chicago Sculpture International, in collaboration with the Ragdale Foundation, is seeking experienced artists and artist teams to give a fifth season to a grand elm on the Ragdale Campus in Lake Forest, IL, by turning it into a sculpture. We are looking for a variety of beautiful, original, unique artistic approaches that will celebrate the diversity of birds in the area and become a distinguishing feature on the Ragdale Foundation’s campus.

Ragdale is one of the largest interdisciplinary artists’ communities in the country. Ragdale residents represent a cross-section of ages, cultures, experiences, and mediums, for a diverse and vibrant community. In the session at Ragdale, artists-in-residence will enjoy uninterrupted time for work and creativity, a supportive environment, dynamic artist exchanges, 50 acres of idyllic prairie, a 7- acre historically significant campus, and a family-style dinner each evening.

Each of the five artists chosen will be working on one of the five large branches of the tree and collaborating on carving the designed wings on the west side of the tree. The approach to the branch sculptures can be additive and/or subtractive. The branches are approximately 8-15 ft. tall. Budget: A two-week Ragdale Residency and $800 paid on completion of their branch.

San Gabriel Storage Partners

San Gabriel, California

Summary: San Gabriel Storage Owner, LLC, is seeking applications from professional Artists and Artist Teams to create an original, permanent work of public art, “Perforated Image Walls,” to be installed in the San Gabriel Artists & Makers Studios complex. This work of art, made of four large wall sections of perforated metal, two on the West elevation and two on the East elevation of the building, will be fabricated and installed by our Contractors.

Budget: The selected Artist or Artist Team, selected by a Panel, will be awarded $12,000 for their design. This fee includes travel and any other expenses as well as fulfillment of all conditions described in this RFP and in any related documents.

Summary: EVMS is a campus of scientists, researchers, educators, learners and healers, the aesthetic is modern, clean, collegial, and authoritative. The artwork should resonate with this brand, showing creativity, innovation and imagination. The work should be fresh, forward-thinking, expansive and airy, clean, approachable and welcoming, clear and purposeful. Artists may want to work with light to showcase the artwork at night. We hope the artwork will become an icon for the city as well as for the whole campus creating a notable sense of place.

Vel R. Phillips Plaza Artist Commission

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Summary: The City of Milwaukee is transforming a surface parking lot into an activated social space to be named after Vel R. Phillips, one of the country’s leading Black woman jurists, politicians and civil rights leaders who was born and raised in Milwaukee.

Unique for the Plaza will be an original art work that honors Vel R. Phillips. The final art work will be a creative expression of her work breaking many social and cultural barriers for women, and for women of color, in Wisconsin as well as the United States.

Trinidad State College, Freudenthal Library – Request for Qualifications

Trinidad, Colorado

Summary: The committee is looking for an artwork that addresses one of the potential locations in the Freudenthal Library. Among the (3) locations available for artwork are a wall-mounted opportunity and ceiling-hung locations. The committee is not interested in three-dimensional sculptural artworks on the floor of any spaces.

Budget: $38,500; A short list of semifinalists will be invited to prepare and present a final proposal in person and be paid an honorarium of $1,000.

Civic Art – Santa Clarita Roller Rink

Summary: The City of Santa Clarita (City) is seeking an artwork to be permanently located at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex. The City intends to select one artist to design and fabricate an original, site-specific artwork to be located on a wall and visible adjacent to the newly built indoor Roller Rink facility.

MSU Bolin Hall Renovation & Expansion

Wichita Falls, Texas

Summary: The Texas Tech University System seeks to commission a professional artist to create site-specific exterior sculpture(s) or installation to be placed at Bolin Hall, on the Midwestern State University campus, located in Wichita Falls, TX. The artist has the option to present a concept for either an interior or exterior piece. Construction of the facility will be completed by July 2025.

The exterior option calls for a large-scale exterior sculpture or wall mural. The interior option calls for art to be located in the entry lobby of the building.

The art in either location will greet visitors as they arrive at Bolin Hall and should help to “activate” that area by creating a welcoming and innovative space. Ideal submissions should consider technology to create an interactive and eye-catching piece.

Summary: The City of Mountain View Visual Arts Committee (VAC) seeks to commission an artist, or an artist team, to create the design and commission for public artwork for Villa-Chiquita Park at 1720 Villa Street. Artists must provide a resumé, examples, and a final design proposal as part of their application.

UFASB Whitney Laboratory for Marine Studies

St. Augustine, Florida

Summary: The Art in State Buildings Program at the University of Florida will commission an artist or artist team to create a site-specific work of art for the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Studies in St. Augustine, FL. The sites for art are both interior and exterior and all appropriate media will be considered. Of particular consideration for exterior works of art is the location on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Matanzas River (Intercoastal Waterway). It is prone to hurricanes, high winds, flooding, and salt air.

Whitney Marine Lab is home to 3 UF Colleges and has a public interface with the sea turtle hospital serving K-12 with educational programming.

The committee is equally considering a single installation or an installation with multiple pieces of art throughout the available locations. 

Materials are important: plastic is not allowable (unless there is an educational reason).

Budget: $95,000-$98,000 (The total budget for this project is $100,000 for finalists’ proposals, creation, and installation of selected work of site-specific art. Finalists will receive an honorarium to create and present a site-specific proposal. The total amount of each honorarium will be determined based on the number of finalists (up to 4), and the total amount available for all honoraria cannot exceed $5,000. The final art budget is between $95,000-$98,000)

Seasons

Blue Springs, Missouri

Summary: This is our fourteenth year of offering a temporary exhibition of art, which will be entitled ““Seasons”.  This “Call to Artists” is seeking Artists wishing to be considered by the Selection Panel for an exhibit placed for one year, from April 1, 2024 to March 1, 2025. Four artists will be selected to provide a work of art for exterior display.  The four artworks will be placed along a major thoroughfare with sidewalk access to the sculptures.

Budget: Each Artist will receive an honorarium of $2,500 for the 11-month exhibition.

If PAC chooses to purchase an artwork for permanent exhibit, the $2,500 will be credited toward the purchase price. PAC will encourage the offer of sale to others if it does not choose to retain the art.

Great Basin National Park Artist in Residence

Great Basin National Park, Nevada

Summary: At Great Basin National Park, artists will be surrounded by the natural beauty of the park from the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak to the depths of Lehman Caves. The park offers the solitude of the wilderness and provides expansive and renowned dark-sky stargazing. The sights, sounds, and textures of the environment, along with uninterrupted time, offer a respite from typical daily life and provide inspiration for creative work.

We are selecting 3 residences from this call. Please apply for all seasons you would like to be considered for. Each residence will occur in 2024. The residencies are as follows:

  • Summer residence. The artist may choose a 2-3 week residency during July and August. This is a CAMPING residency.
  • Fall residence. The artist may choose a 2-3 week residency during September and October. This residency has park housing.
  • Winter residence. The artist may choose a 2-3 week residency during January and February. This residency has park housing.

Budget: The selected artists will be awarded housing (either camping or lodging) but no other stipend. The artists must pay for their own travel as well as food and other expenditures.

Artistic Bus Shelters (3D) RFP

Winston-Salem

Summary: The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission is seeking artists to reimagine and transform several bus shelters around the city. The Public Art Commission asks artists to think three-dimensionally and propose a sculptural project that builds on the base of an existing bus shelter to create a functional work of art. Designs should alter the shelter’s structural appearance from all angles; this can be done by adding elements to the shelter and/or physically changing the existing panels. All completed artworks should be permanent, meaning they use durable, weather-resistant materials that require minimal maintenance.

Budget: $19,999 (The budget of $19,999 per shelter is intended to pay for design, materials, fabrication, insurance, storage, transportation, and installation of the artwork on site. The City will pay for structural engineering if required.)

The Rbhu Gives Back Grants

International

Summary: At Rbhu, we believe that art plays a key role in lifting the human spirit; it ignites our imagination with possibilities, helps us process and express our feelings, and brings people together for a collective cause. We believe that monumental sculptures have the power to inspire creativity and can positively impact the health and well-being of those around them.

Engineering large-scale art sculptures is our mission, and we are fortunate to play a part in bringing life-transformative experiences to the world. We exist because of our community and its vision, so we feel the need to do our part to support them. We are honored to announce that we are launching the 2023 Rbhu Gives Back grants, offering $12,000 worth of free engineering services to artists in need.
